Campsite Options for Family-Friendly Camping
Set at a higher altitude, this campground offers stunning sunset views and a variety of site options:
- 24 Altitude and Basecamp tent sites
- 15 powered sites for campervans/trailers
- 4 walk-in bushwalker sites
- 17 powered safari tents for hire
Being right next to O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat, campers also get easy access to rainforest experiences, tours, and cafes—perfect for mixing wilderness with a touch of comfort.
How to Book
Booking is easy and can be done directly through the O’Reilly’s website. Make sure to check the seasonal availability and activity schedules in advance.
Out of the 60 campsites available, I personally recommend choosing an Altitude Site. They’re conveniently located near the communal kitchen and firepit, and offer stunning views of the surrounding rainforest. While they cost about $10 more per night, the comfort and convenience are absolutely worth it.
Facilities: Sleep, Eat, and Play
From my personal experience, successful camping comes down to three things: Sleep, Eat, and Play.
Sleep
Whether you’re setting up your own tent or opting for a safari tent with power, O’Reilly’s offers solid options for families, couples, or solo campers. Just bring what you need to stay cosy and warm—it can get surprisingly chilly up in the mountains. Choosing the right family camping tent also makes a big difference in comfort, especially for cooler conditions, so it’s worth understanding what to look for before your trip. Eat (and Why the Kitchen Is a Game-Changer!)
Packing and prepping food is usually the most time-consuming part of camping, especially when you have little ones to fee. That’s why I was thrilled to discover O’Reilly’s communal camp kitchen. It’s a true lifesaver, especially for families.
Here’s what’s available:
- Two working fridges for food storage
- Gas stoves and BBQ plates
- Hot water tank and working sinks
- Large dining area with breathtaking views of the McPherson Range
I didn’t realize this kitchen existed until I arrived—and it made a huge difference! I saw fellow campers whipping up BBQs, curries, spaghetti, and more. And being able to store food meant no emergency drive to Canungra, the nearest town (about an hour away).
Dining Out Option
Feeling a bit fancy? The campground is just steps away from O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat, where you can dine at:
- The Mountain Café
- The Dining Room
- The Rainforest Bar
Perfect for an easy breakfast or a little splurge without leaving the mountain.
Activities for Families & Kids
Immersing in nature is always part of the fun, but it’s even better when there are structured activities to keep kids engaged (and parents a bit more relaxed). O’Reilly’s offers both free and paid programs suitable and friendly for all ages.
Here are some activities we enjoyed:
- Birds of Prey Show – Get up close with some of Australia’s most incredible birds of prey in this intimate free-flight show. Watch as eagles, owls, and falcons soar through the sky, displaying their natural behaviours. It’s both educational and awe-inspiring—perfect for curious kids and adults alike.
- Glow Worm Experience – The night we booked the Glow Worm tour, the rain was pouring—but the experience went ahead, and we’re so glad it did! This guided night walk through the rainforest led us to the glowing homes of these magical creatures. Despite the weather, it was a highlight for my child, who was absolutely enchanted by the twinkling glow worms. A truly unforgettable experience!
- Daily Bird Feeding – This free event is a favourite for lorikeet lovers. Kids get to hand-feed vibrant, cheeky lorikeets, and hearing them giggle with delight is a memory you won’t forget. It’s messy, loud, and completely joyful—just the way camping with kids should be.
- “Best of O’Reilly’s” 4WD Tour – What’s the best way to explore the wonders of Lamington National Park? A bumpy 4WD tour with a knowledgeable local guide! We visited breathtaking lookouts like Moran Falls and explored short walks through the rainforest. Our guide shared fascinating facts about the local flora, fauna, and ecosystem—an unexpected and valuable learning experience for both the kids and us parents.
You can check the full list and schedules on their Activity Page.
Bonus: Eco Rangers School Holiday Program
During school holidays, O’Reilly’s runs the half-day session Eco Rangers Program, where kids can join nature-based, creative activities while parents get a well-deserved break. This is what truly sets O’Reilly’s apart when it comes to family-friendly camping in QLD.
